El Salvador, a small Central American nation, had one of the
largest per capita rates of murder in the world for decades due
to gang violence and organised crime. The murder rate,
violence, and the control of organised crime groups in El
Salvador has massively reduced since 2019 when Nayib Bukele,
the then new president, implemented an ambitious plan that
included the mass rounding up of suspected gang members.
While this has considerably helped in making the nation safer,
there have also been criticism that these mass arrests have led
to massive human rights violations.
